Voters frustrated with Electronic Registry shortcomings

By The Star Staff

The Electronic Registry of Voters, known as eRE, has turned out to be a failure for voters seeking to register, re-register or transfer their registration in order to exercise their right to vote on Nov. 5.

With 10 days to go before the final voter registration deadline, several people have reported to CyberNews that they have not been able to complete any of the procedures because the system does not recognize the voter, assigns them a different electoral number than the one they already had or simply rejects their application without further explanation.

“The website tells you to call a phone number to get your voter registration number, and when you call, they tell you that you have to go to the Permanent Registration Board [JIP by its initials in Spanish] because they cannot verify your identity over the phone,” said Lynnette Ramos, who is frustrated with the process because she has been waiting a week to complete her re-registration. “There are JIP offices that no one knows where they are, and when you call, they don’t answer the phone.”

She said she has been trying to re-register for several weeks because the instructions in the eRE are not clear, so she tried to register as a new voter to see if that was the problem.

“They denied my application four days later. I had already submitted the documents and everything, but they didn’t take them into account,” Ramos said. “When I tried to register as a pre-registered person, they asked me for my voter registration number, as well as my social security number, license number, etc. Since I didn’t have my voter registration number on hand, they told me to call a number. I called and they answered me two days later to tell me that they couldn’t give me my voter registration number over the phone because they had to verify my identity, which doesn’t make sense because they could look up my record and verify my identity with social security and license number.”

Frustrated by the difficulty in registering, Ramos went in person to a JIP and was given her electoral number. She returned home to complete the process.
