The University of Puerto Rico (UPR) has opened its online admission process for the academic semester that will begin in August 2025, according to a statement Thursday.

Applicants will be able to complete their application by Jan. 22, 2025, through the portal admisiones.upr.edu with a new digital tool that will make access to information more agile and practical: an interactive chatbot.

The chatbot, powered by generative artificial intelligence, uses all official information about the admissions process at UPR: requirements, key dates, academic programs, and much more. With the advanced technology, the university takes an essential step toward optimizing student services by way of digital transformation. In addition, it offers a fast and accurate orientation experience for those who wish to start or continue their university career at the top university in the Caribbean, as recognized by the QS Rankings 2025.

This year, UPR has brought forward the opening of the application to make it easier for students to plan ahead.

“At the University of Puerto Rico, we remain committed to providing access to an excellent education, which distinguishes us as the island’s main teaching and research center,” UPR President Luis Ferrao Delgado said. “In this historical context, we have implemented significant changes to ensure that our students live the unique experience that only UPR can offer.”

Ferrao added that he hopes to surpass the number of applicants from last year.

Ivonne Calderón, director of the Admissions Office, said “applicants may select up to three academic programs in their application, organized in order of preference.”

“These options may be from the same campus or different units, increasing the chances of admission,” she said.

The portal admisiones.upr.edu not only allows students to send the application, but also offers information about the new admissions policy for new students, which provides the opportunity to request admission under one of the approved pathways: traditional and non-traditional.

Under the non-traditional route, students must have a 2.00 grade point average, and the entrance exam is not mandatory. They must seek guidance from the admissions offices.

Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Mayra Charriez emphasized that “every qualified student who meets the admission requirements will be accepted after the evaluation of their application. Those close to meeting the requirements will be placed on a waiting list and have the opportunity to request reconsideration.”

As part of admissions and recruitment efforts, the UPR va pa’ Plaza event will take place on Dec. 6, 7 and 8 on the second level of Plaza Las Américas in front of Starbucks. During those days, students will be able to complete the admission application and learn about available financial aid.
