In a significant development, Gregory Matías Gutiérrez, the son of New Progressive Party (NPP) Senate Majority Leader Gregorio Matías Rosario, has pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court for his involvement in the slaying of police officer Miguel José Pérez Ríos in 2015.

The crime occurred at a gas station in Río Piedras in the early hours of Sept. 7, where Pérez Ríos, a 32-year-old part-time worker and father of two girls, a boy, and an unborn child, was stalked and executed.

The plea agreement, dated Feb. 20, includes a new charge of conspiracy, alleging that Matías Gutiérrez, along with other unidentified individuals, knowingly and intentionally possessed the firearms and ammunition used in a drug trafficking crime that led to Pérez Ríos’ killing.

A sentencing hearing for Matías Gutiérrez has been scheduled for May 22 in Courtroom 6 of the U.S. Court for the District of Puerto Rico in Hato Rey, under the supervision of Judge Silvia Carreño Coll.

According to court documents, Matías Gutiérrez allegedly confessed to being the driver of the vehicle that picked up the gunmen after they fatally shot Pérez Ríos. The entire incident was captured by security cameras at the Shell gas station on highway PR-838, Camino Alejandrino, in Caimito.

Orlando Carmona Serrano, Victor Rafael Molina Santos, Marlon Laguna Santos, and Joseph Manuel Molina Santos, were also charged in relation to the killing.
