As part of Mayor Miguel Romero Lugo’s commitment to strengthen the San Juan police force to meet the capital city’s security, life and property protection needs, 42 new cadets graduated from the Municipal Police Academy in a ceremony held this week at the Tapia Theater.
“We recognize the dedication and commitment of each of these cadets to realize this significant achievement,” Romero Lugo said in a statement Tuesday. “We respectfully and hopefully highlight their courage in serving all of San Juan. For our administration, it is a priority to have the resources available for the safety of all San Juan residents; our San Juan Municipal Police continues to rise with the graduation of 42 new police officers.”
During the ceremony, three awards were given for the three highest scores per category: Academic GPA, Shooting Level I, and Shooting Level III.
In the Academic GPA category, the bronze medal, with a GPA of 3.87, went to Cadet Priscilla J. Báez Delgado, the silver medal, with a GPA of 3.87, went to Cadet Amarilis D. Vélez, and the gold medal, with a GPA of 3.97, went to Cadet Brandon S. Marrero Rodríguez.
In Shooting Level I, the bronze medal went to Cadet Alejandro Andújar Martínez, and the silver medal to Cadet Brandon Marrero Rodríguez. In Shooting Level III, the bronze medal was awarded to Cadet Perty Medina Martínez and the silver medal to Cadet Jean O. Pérez Ortiz.
The training period for this academy was 31 weeks, which began on March 18 of this year. After completing the 160 hours of mentoring, the cadets join the municipal police force, with an investment of $5,258 per cadet.
Currently, the San Juan Municipal Police has 715 members who belong to the rank system. Although this is the 47th San Juan Municipal Police Academy to graduate, itr is the fifth academy under the current Romero Lugo administration. With the past five academies, 178 members have joined the police force in the current four-year term.
Direct investment in the municipal police exceeds $20 million, and includes the purchase of 150 patrol cars, as well as remodeling and construction of two new police stations.
