Supreme Court Chief Justice Maite Oronoz Rodríguez signed a collaborative agreement on Monday with the PITI Centers and various government agencies to improve comprehensive care for victims in cases of child sexual abuse.
The agreement seeks to strengthen protocols, coordinate multidisciplinary teams and prevent the re-victimization of minors.
“This agreement represents a crucial step toward justice, healing and hope for children who are victims of sexual violence, one of the most devastating manifestations of gender violence,” Oronoz Rodríguez said.
The agreement includes the Justice, Health, Public Safety and Family departments, the Health Justice Center, the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus and the San Juan Bautista School of Medicine. Its objectives include improving communication between the parties involved, collecting relevant data and offering ongoing training.
The signing took place during the Collaboration in Action for Victims of Sexual Abuse event organized by the judiciary as part of the international campaign “16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence.”
PITI Centers, formerly CIMVAS Centers, provide safe spaces and comprehensive treatment for child victims and their families, in addition to facilitating interagency communication in judicial processes. Their services are coordinated through the Justice for Children Project, which promotes initiatives for access to justice in cases of child abuse and neglect.
