The outgoing president of the Popular Democratic Party (PDP), Jesús Manuel Ortiz González, said Tuesday that he feels betrayed by individuals within the party and in other sectors, following his decision to resign effective Feb. 2.
“I feel betrayed by many people, not only in relation to myself but also concerning the party as a whole,” Ortiz stated during a radio interview on Radio Isla 1320. “I believe they have done a disservice to the country.”
During his 20-month presidency, Ortiz faced both internal and external opposition that he described as “unnecessary and vicious,” highlighting instances ranging from critical opinion columns to threats of not voting for his candidacy. He believes the situation ultimately benefited the now-governing New Progressive Party (NPP).
Ortiz asserted that the environment created confusion among voters, which contributed to an electoral victory for the NPP. He contends that the outcome of last November’s elections now ensures the NPP control over the island Supreme Court and key appointments for the coming decades.
While Ortiz emphasized the importance of keeping communication open with other groups, he cautioned that no one should expect to assume an “unshakable leading role.” He reiterated that the structure of the PDP is the strongest option for defeating the NPP in upcoming elections.
