NPP demands apology from Juan Dalmau for Venezuela comparison

By John McPhaul

The New Progressive Party candidates for the Senate for the District of Arecibo, Brenda Pérez Soto and Gaby González López , asked today for a public apology from the executive director of the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) and candidate for governor for the Independence Alliance (AI), Juan Dalmau Ramirez, for the what they called regrettable and unfortunate statements in which he claims that the electoral system in Venezuela is similar to that of Puerto Rico, creating a stir in all sectors and electoral officials on the Island.

González López said: “Together with my running mate, Brenda Pérez Soto, we demand that the AI candidate for governor offer a public apology to the thousands and thousands of electoral officials, coordinators and commissioners who do excellent work in the State Elections Commission, guaranteeing faithful compliance with our Electoral Code, which offers all political parties participation, transparency and clarity. This Code guarantees full and faithful compliance with the rules of the democracy we enjoy in Puerto Rico, where the voting intention of each of our voters is guaranteed; opening the doors for emerging parties to have representation in the Legislature today.”

Perez Soto added: “I am a product of an effective electoral system in Puerto Rico. In the last primary, everyone knows that there were some confusing situations that were immediately identified and amended, because the regulations of our commission are clear. That is why, thanks to the good work of our officials, I will be participating in the next electoral event to be part of the Senate of Puerto Rico for the District of Arecibo.” In turn, Perez Soto recalled that last four years, when the Senate worked on the new Electoral Code, Dalmau Ramirez was asked to be in charge of said Legislative Commission, but he rejected it. “Which in turn makes him a hypocrite.”

Gaby González, who says she has been an expert on these electoral processes for many years, regretted Juan Dalmau’s statements: “We know that it could have been a smokescreen to distract attention from what is really happening with the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, who in the past, both he and the people of his party, idolized him as a national hero and now they are trying to separate themselves, continuing their pattern of deceit and meanness towards our people. For the Alliance, their goal is to come to power to do exactly the same thing that Maduro does in Venezuela, plunge us into extreme poverty and take away the rights and freedoms that our democracy guarantees.”
