The San Juan metropolitan area set a temperature record for consecutive days above 90°F on Tuesday -- 37 days, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

On Monday, the temperature in the San Juan metro area again peaked at above 90°F, the NWS in San Juan reported. With that figure, the capital of Puerto Rico equaled the previous record of 36 consecutive days with maximum temperatures above 90°F, established during June and July of 2012.

With temperatures rising above 90°F again on Tuesday, San Juan set a new record of 37 consecutive days of markedly high temperatures. The milestone reinforces the need for authorities, along with citizens, to continue monitoring and preparing for the impacts of the extreme weather that much of the island has been experiencing in recent weeks.

The prolonged period of intense heat has raised concerns among climate experts, who say that such prolonged phenomena may be related to global warming patterns. In addition, authorities have warned about the possible effects on public health, especially for the most vulnerable people, such as the elderly and children, who are more prone to suffer heat stroke and other complications related to high temperatures.

The NWS stressed the importance of staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun and seeking shelter in cool, well-ventilated areas.
