The Caguas Prosecutor’s Office filed criminal charges on Wednesday against Luis Abreu Massa, 36, who is accused of throwing his three-month-old son to the ground, causing serious bodily injury.
“Charges were filed for child abuse and aggravated assault,” Janet Parra Mercado, designated Justic Secretary said in a written statement.
The incident occurred on April 7, when the defendant lost control after being unable to calm the baby’s crying, according to the investigation by Agent Delianis Rivera Merced of the Sexual Crimes and Child Abuse Division.
Judge Carlos Capó Hernández found cause for arrest and set bail at $350,000, which was posted. He also issued an ex parte protection order in favor of the child.
The preliminary hearing was scheduled for Monday, April 22, at the Caguas Court of First Instance.
