Indians fall to Mexico in Caribbean Series semifinal

The Mayagüez Indians lost 3-1 to the host Charros de Jalisco on Wednesday night in the semifinals of the 2025 Caribbean Series at Nido de las Águilas Stadium in Mexicali, Mexico.

With the defeat, the Indians (Indios) were eliminated from the tournament while Mexico advanced to its first Caribbean Series final in seven years.

Mexico (5-0) will face the Leones del Escogido of the Dominican Republic in the final on Friday night (10 p.m. ET), while Venezuela and Puerto Rico were to face off for third place on Thursday night.

Wednesday night’s game was decided in the first inning, when the Charros scored three runs against Indians starter Ronnie Williams (0-1). Billy Hamilton wreaked havoc on the bases and Rudy Martin Jr. sent him home with a double. Later, Martin Jr. and Michael Wielansky scored on a single by Mateo Gil.

The Indians scored their only run in the seventh inning, when Eddie Rosario led off with a triple after an error in center field by Hamilton. Rosario then scored on a single by Isán Díaz to make the score 3-1.

Mexico starter David Reyes (2-0) kept Puerto Rico’s batters at bay, pitching six scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and issuing three walks.

Charros reliever Jesús Cruz allowed the Indians’ run, but then Stephen Nogosek pitched a scoreless eighth inning. Trevor Clifton closed out the game with his third save of the tournament.

The Dominican Republic won Wednesday’s other semifinal, 5-4, after scoring the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th inning and then holding off defending champion Venezuela to seal a berth in the final.
