House Treasury Committee Chairman Jesús Santa Rodríguez, of the Popular Democratic Party (PDP), announced Monday that he lost his legislative seat in the 31st District, which covers Caguas and Gurabo.

The outgoing lawmaker had served three four-year terms in the lower chamber. He lost his seat to the New Progressive Party (NPP) contender, Vimarie Peña Dávila.

“I congratulate my friend Vimarie Peña for having been elected representative of District 31. She has my help and support to ensure the well-being of all our constituents. Also, I am at the disposal of the new government and the members of the Legislative Assembly because we all seek a better Puerto Rico,” the legislator said on social media. “To the colleagues of our legislative office, thank you for always doing quality work and having a commitment to excellence and service. A very special thanks, also, to the electoral components and officials, who gave their hearts in each assignment in the defense of the will and conscience of the voters.”

After the final votes from polling stations in Gurabo, particularly the early voting by mail, had been tallied, Santa came up short against his leading opponent, PDP Alternate Electoral Commissioner Gerardo Cruz Maldonado confirmed in a radio interview.

“The advantage of his contender is already quite wide,” Cruz said. “That mail vote was worked on mainly by the NPP people in his district. So we do not expect changes.”
