House kicks off 20th Legislative Assembly on Monday

The island House of Representatives begins the work of the first regular session of the 20th Legislative Assembly with the traditional inaugural session next Monday starting at 1 p.m.


The announcement was made by the incoming deputy speakers of the lower chamber, Yashira Lebrón Rodríguez and Angel Peña Ramírez, along with District 11 (Dorado, Vega Alta and Vega Baja) Rep. Elinette González Aguayo.


According to the legislative protocol for this type of session, the acting speaker of the House of Representatives and current secretary of the lower chamber, Javier Gómez Cruz, will open the proceedings, which will include the invocation, which will be led by Mizraim Esquilín García, pastor of the AMEC House of Praise Church. Then the official anthems of Puerto Rico and the United States will be performed by young singer Jeyshangelise García Pérez.


The official work of the 20th House of Representatives will begin with the nomination process for the leadership of the legislative body, including the speaker, deputy speakers and spokespersons.


Rep. Carlos “Johnny” Méndez Nuñez was selected by the majority delegation to serve as Speaker. Lebrón, who represents District 8 of Bayamón, and Peña, representing District 33, which includes the municipalities of Las Piedras, Juncos and San Lorenzo, will serve as deputy speakers.


Puerto Rico Supreme Court Justices, as well as numerous mayors, government officials and community leaders, among others, will be part of the attendees at the inaugural session of the oldest legislative body in Puerto Rico, which was created on Nov. 25, 1897 under the Spanish regime.


At the conclusion of the nomination process, the new speaker will deliver a message.


The entire ceremony will be broadcast live and free of charge through the House of Representatives’ official Facebook page.
