Hernández Rivera presents 3 proposals for affordable housing

Pablo José Hernández Rivera, the Popular Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for resident commissioner, presented three proposals for affordable housing for Puerto Rico on Sunday.

Among his proposals, Hernández Rivera said he will promote the initiative of the vice president and candidate for the presidency of the United States, Kamala Harris, to contribute $25,000 to the purchase of a first home.

“We need a resident commissioner who thinks about the country’s problems, beyond thinking about status and plebiscites, and housing is one of the main challenges we face,” Hernández Rivera said. “These proposals that I am presenting today will help young people, especially first-time home buyers, veterans, victims of domestic violence, and low-income people, in purchasing their first home, [along with] the construction industry.”

Hernández Rivera pledged to promote the inclusion of Puerto Rico in Harris’ proposal, which consists of providing an advance of up to $25,000 so that eligible people can buy their first home.

The PDP candidate also presented his support for House Resolution 3238, the “Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act of 2023.” The bill would increase tax credits for the construction of affordable housing, encourage the development of housing for veterans, rural areas, and areas with high levels of poverty, among others. It would also incorporate protections for victims of domestic violence who live in affordable housing.

Hernández Rivera said he also plans to push for a review of the income limits for low-income housing, which are lower in Puerto Rico than in other jurisdictions in the United States, including the U.S. Virgin Islands.
