Dr. Rodolfo Elías Alcedo Guardia, a cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgeon, on Monday summarized the clinical picture for Griselle Morales Rodríguez, the wife of Juan Dalmau Ramírez, the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP)-Alliance candidate for governor, after she suffered a brain aneurysm and hydrocephalus on Oct. 14.
“She is within the lucky group that arrived alive to the hospital, she arrived in good neurological condition and has remained that way, so she is in the third, let’s say that if things continue like this, let’s trust in God that she will get through it,” Alcedo Guardia said in a press conference in Caguas.
“Headache is the main symptom of an aneurysm. And when they break, the complaint is the worst headache of one’s life. That is something that patients universally say,” added the director of the Neurosciences area and the Endovascular and Cerebrovascular Neurosurgery Service at Mennonite Hospital in Caguas.
Alcedo Guardia noted that seven days after suffering the brain aneurysm, from the seventh day to the 10th day, is critical due to it being a period of vasospasm.
“Fortunately, she has not developed it [a vasospasm], but that is why we have her in the neurointensive care unit, because it is a possibility,” he said. “We are not out of danger.”
The specialist added that the patient could remain confined for up to 21 days, if vasospasm situations do not occur. Alcedo Guardia said Morales could undergo surgery on two or three occasions, if necessary.
Dalmau’s campaign director, Calixto Negrón, said meanwhile that the candidate’s participation in tonight’s gubernatorial debate had not yet been determined.
“What we are asking for is that as long as Griselle is stable, as long as the doctors indicate that she is well, Juan Dalmau will be reinserted into the campaign,” Negrón said. “For now, the call is to give him that space; in this particular period that is the most critical thing.”
“But he is not giving up,” he added. “He is very conscious of the responsibility that he has, particularly in this historic moment. The call is to those who are supporting him in this electoral campaign, to represent him in all the activities that we have ahead of us from now until November 5 until he can reintegrate into the campaign.”
