Governor announces new appointments for Cabinet & other agencies



Ángel Pantoja was tapped to head the Treasury Department.

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón announced on Tuesday a new round of appointments for her Cabinet and other government agencies, which includes leaders in key areas such as treasury, labor, economic development, recreation and sports, tourism and transportation.


“This component, obviously, will be sworn in today by the secretary of state and will begin its functions today in recess, since the Legislative Assembly begins its operations next week, on Monday,” the governor said at a press conference. “So with these appointments we are filling what is the constitutional Cabinet, and tomorrow we will have another group. If we were not going to be here all afternoon, I would have presented them all here. So I want to congratulate the new members of the Cabinet for their willingness to work for Puerto Rico, to fulfill the task that the people gave us with a government platform, which is the guide for what we are going to be doing.”


Willianette Robles Cancel was named executive director of the Tourism Company.

Among the appointees is Ángel Pantoja as treasury secretary. Pantoja, who has held various roles within the agency, was a key player in the digitalization of the tax system known as SURI. “Ángel Pantoja has an exceptional professional career that will be essential to maintaining fiscal stability and the modernization of the Treasury Department,” González Colón said.


For the Department of Labor and Human Resources, Nydza Irizarry Algarín was appointed as secretary. Irizarry has more than 30 years of experience in the legal and human resources field, having led significant organizational reforms in various government agencies.


“Her vision of transformation and leadership experience will be crucial to strengthening the workforce in Puerto Rico,” the governor said.


Sebastián Negrón Reichard was appointed as secretary of the Department of Economic Development and Commerce.

Negrón, a Harvard graduate, has experience in the public and private sectors, including roles in Boston and Puerto Rico, as well as in banking and technology. The governor highlighted his commitment to economic development and permit reform as essential elements of her administration.


Héctor Vázquez Muñiz, with a 38-year career in the media, was named secretary of the Department of Recreation and Sports. Vázquez has worked as a consultant on government projects and has been a prominent figure in the coverage of sporting events, including the Olympic Games.


Other appointments include Willianette Robles Cancel as executive director of the Tourism Company. Robles has experience in rebuilding post-hurricane communities and positioning Puerto Rico as a global tourist destination.


“Her strategic approach will be key to continue developing the island’s tourism sector,” González Colón said.


Attorney Ángel Cruz Nolasco was appointed as commissioner of the Bureau of Transportation and Public Services. Cruz, with experience in the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority and heavy transport regulation, will focus on ensuring safety and compliance in the island’s public and private transit systems.
