The State Elections Commission (SEC) granted the official final certification as the gubernatorial candidate of the New Progressive Party (NPP) to Jenniffer González Colón on Sunday, at the conclusion of the general vote count after the June 2 primaries.
The official certification by the SEC made González Colón the president of the pro-statehood party, according to Article 93 of the NPP Regulations. It reads: “The official candidate for Governor of Puerto Rico will be President of the Party. If elected, the Governor will retain the position of President of the Party.”
With the end of the count, almost a month after the primaries were held, the final result of the vote for the NPP governorship ended as follows: Jenniffer González Colón 174,203 votes (54.26%) and Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia 146,872 votes (45.74%). González Colón’s margin of victory was 27,331 votes (9%).
In addition, the turnout in the primary exceeded 323,000 voters, surpassing by more than 30,000 voters the turnout in the 2020 NPP primary.
With her primary victory, González Colón became the first woman to be the NPP’s official candidate for governor of Puerto Rico and the first woman president of the party.
