As part of the celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the City of Aguadilla, the Municipal Office of Economic Development and Tourism has designed a series of events under the name “Aguadilla Celebrates with the World.”
The cultural exchange event is taking place during the weekends of August and September, and will feature the participation of countries such as Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Costa Rica and Colombia.
“This weekend we will celebrate our cultural ties with our Venezuelan brothers, who have a large community in the municipality of Aguadilla as well as throughout the island,” Mayor Julio Roldán Concepciôn said. “As part of this meeting between countries, our people are honored to receive the former President in Charge of Venezuela, Hon. Juan Guaidó, who will offer a talk entitled ‘Democratic Venezuela.’ It will take place on Saturday, August 31 at 10 a.m. at the Manuel Méndez Ballester amphitheater on the fifth floor of Aguadilla City Hall.”
It should be noted that Guaidó is referred to as the “president in charge” because, in early 2019, during the political crisis in Venezuela, the opposition-controlled National Assembly appointed him as such after the legislative body declared that Nicolás Maduro’s re-election in the 2018 elections was illegitimate due to numerous irregularities and lack of international recognition.
Venezuela’s Constitution provides that in the absence of a legitimately elected president, the president of the National Assembly temporarily assumes the functions of the president until new elections can be held. Guaidó, the president of the National Assembly at the time, was designated as “president in charge” under this constitutional precept, with the responsibility of leading a transitional government and organizing new elections. The designation was recognized by several countries, especially in the Americas and Europe.
The events organized by the Municipal Economic Development and Tourism Office consist of the presence of cultural, gastronomic and artisanal entities from the countries that visit Aguadilla on Saturdays and Sundays. Attendees can enjoy music, dance, crafts, gastronomy and the cultural exchange of Puerto Rico and the different participating countries.
Roldán Concepciôn noted that the Consular Corps of the Dominican Republic and Mexico have joined the event which, in addition to providing entertainment for Aguadillans and visitors, has become one “where we can learn about and share with our Latin American brothers their customs and traditions.”
