The Puerto Rico Baseball Federation (FBPR by its initials in Spanish) began preparations this week for the Copa Unión Antillana, which will be heldFeb. 21-23 at Luis “Canena” Márquez Stadium in Aguadilla, with Carlos Delgado as manager.

“It is an honor to announce that Carlos Delgado will be the manager of the National Team for the Copa Unión Antillana,” FBPR President José Daniel Quiles said in a written statement. “His debut as a manager, and in his native Aguadilla, highlights the importance of this event.”

Delgado, a former Major League player, described the opportunity as a source of pride and a significant challenge, especially for managing in his hometown.

“We are going to give it our all to field a competitive team against great powers like the Dominican Republic and Cuba,” Delgado said.

The National Team, made up of top talent, will begin practices next week. Delgado stressed that many of the players are in excellent physical shape after competing in local leagues, something that should benefit the team on the field.

The Copa Unión Antillana, which brings together Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Cuba in an event organized by the Municipality of Aguadilla, promises to be a celebration of the region’s sporting talent.
