The island Family Department (DF by its initials in Spanish) earlier this week brought together some 150 adoptive families, including children who had been in the custody of the state, at a Christmas event held at Luis Muñoz Marín Park in San Juan.
The event, called “Family Adoption Day,” recognized the stories of various families who opened their homes to children in vulnerable situations and highlighted the transformative impact that adoption can have on the lives of children in Puerto Rico.
“This celebration reminds us of the power of adoption to change lives. Every boy and girl deserves a loving and safe home where they are loved, while they grow and develop fully,” Family Secretary Ciení Rodríguez Troche said. “Seeing these families united, sharing experiences, is the most powerful proof that adoption transforms the life of each member of the family unit and the community.”
Among the inspiring stories mentioned during the event were: the case of a couple who adopted a 10-year-old child, providing him with stability and love; a couple who decided to permanently adopt a quadriplegic minor they met while serving as foster parents; and a woman who, after participating in a DF activity, decided to adopt two sisters ages 9 and 11, one of whom is hearing impaired.
“Each recognized story is proof of the unconditional love, courage and commitment of adoptive families,” said Nicole Báez Ortiz, who directs the Administration for Families and Children. “These people transformed the lives of these children and inspire us to consider adoption as a real and attainable option to offer a second chance to a minor.”
Currently, there are about 140 minors in Puerto Rico who have been released from parental authority and are waiting for a permanent home. The officials reiterated the invitation to individuals and families interested in adoption to register in the Voluntary State Adoption Registry and join a process that offers new life opportunities to minors in need.
