Consumers will end up paying more for water due to the proposed installation of smart meters by the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA), but the change will benefit the water utility.
The incoming government transition committee provided the information on Tuesday. Committee member Oriol Campos said people should be aware of the situation.
“There was a question that was answered to our satisfaction regarding the new smart meter project. It is a project that is necessary to give visibility to both the consumer and PRASA on people’s consumption,” he said. “Still, it is important that they know and that people are made aware that it will probably impact the bill they pay every month.”
In PRASA’s fiscal plan, for example, it is established that annually there will be a $95 million impact on the corporation’s income that will end up coming out of the consumers’ pockets.
“It is important that this information be disclosed so that all consumers know this, and we know that these meters have their positive aspects, but it will represent an increase,” Campos said. “Of course, they will be replaced by regular technicians, but it will impact the bill; it is important to communicate that information.”
He said the committee had questions about the process of installing smart meters, and that it needs to have information on the results of a pilot project, along with information as to which smart meters work best.
