Rev. Pedro Rafael Ortiz of the San Pablo Apóstol Parish in Caguas has started a series of “coffee conversations” aimed at addressing Puerto Rico’s social problems, inviting gubernatorial candidates and other political leaders to participate individually.
The initiative is part of the “social and community evangelization project” that the parish has developed over the past two years, inspired by Pope Paul VI’s encyclical “Ecclesiam suam,” which promotes dialogue between the Catholic Church and society.
“The problems we face are everyone’s and affect everyone,” the priest said in a statement. “The democratic way is to discuss them together and know that only together can these problems find a solution. Because in a community like the human one, one does not save oneself.”
Ortiz said meetings have already begun with the participation of Juan Dalmau Ramírez, the Puerto Rican Independence Party and Alliance candidate for governor, and will continue with the other candidates.
“We hope to conclude at the end of October, in line with the ‘8th World Day of the Poor 2024’ that Pope Francis celebrates in November of each year,” the priest said.
