Business groups support González Colón’s plan for energy transformation task force

LUMA Energy reasserts opposition to ‘going back to failed policies’

Following the announcement by Governor-elect Jenniffer González Colón regarding the creation of a Working Committee for the Electrical Transformation, several business sector organizations, such as the Puerto Rico Manufacturers Association (PRMA) and the Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce (CCPR), reacted positively to the measure, while LUMA Energy expressed a dissenting position.

The PRMA applauded the decision to include its president, Eric Santiago Justiniano, in the committee.

“It is an honor for us that the governor-elect trusts in the vision and leadership of our president,” PRMA Executive Vice President Yandia Pérez said. “We are prepared to actively collaborate in the creation of energy solutions that benefit all productive sectors.”

Santiago Justiniano expressed gratitude for the invitation and promised to contribute to achieving a reliable electrical system, which the PRMA stressed faces infrastructure and cost challenges, affecting both residential and industrial consumers.

The CCPR, meanwhile, endorsed the multi-sector committee.

“The continued fragility of the electrical system has been a significant obstacle to economic development,” CCPR President Luis Pizarro Otero said. “This appointment demonstrates the Governor-elect’s commitment to collaboration and concrete solutions.”

The business entity offered the expertise of its members to join forces in the transformation of the energy sector.

However, LUMA Energy, the company contracted to provide electric power transmission and distribution to Puerto Rico, expressed a dissenting stance on the possibility of going back to past policies that led to the bankruptcy of the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA).

“Going back to the failed policies that led to PREPA’s bankruptcy and failure is not an option,” LUMA President Juan Saca said.

The company emphasized the progress made since it took over operations, including more than 140 reconstruction projects, installation of resistant utility poles and modernization of substations. Saca said LUMA understands the concerns, but defends the long-term, comprehensive approach to the electrical transformation.

The working committee formed by the governor-elect is tasked with advising on possible substitutes for LUMA, speeding up the construction of generation plants, diversifying energy sources, using federal funds for reconstruction and addressing the restructuring of PREPA’s debt, among other issues.
