New Progressive Party Rep. José Aponte Hernández said Monday that Juan Dalmau Ramírez, who ran for governor last year under the “Alliance” between the Puerto Rican Independence Party and the Citizen Victory Movement, lied to members of Congress about the results of the status plebiscite held in Puerto Rico last Nov. 5.
“The candidate of the famous ‘independence junta’ visited the federal capital at the end of November to allege that the independence movement had more than 30% of the status vote, something that wasn’t correct and he knew it,” Aponte said in a written statement. “His desire to be relevant made him say things to the congressmen and ‘staffers’ that weren’t true.”
“Statehood prevailed with 59% of the votes; this was a broad majority,” the veteran lawmaker noted. “This is the message that we are going to take in the coming days to the new Congress.”
Statehood prevailed in the non-binding plebiscite with 58.61%, (620,782 votes), free association was second with 29.57% (313,259) and independence garnered 11.82% (125,171).
Aponte has a series of meetings scheduled in Washington during the next few days to bring the message of equality, urge congressional action, deliver the State Elections Commission certification of the results of the status plebiscite and continue promoting the implementation of the will of the people in favor of statehood.
